UNIT II
Define Internet
The Internet is a vast network that
connects computers all over the world. Through the Internet, people can share
information and communicate from anywhere with an Internet connection.
Explain the concept of Internet?/ Explain the evaluation of Internet
The Internet is a global
network of billions of computers and other electronic devices. With the
Internet, it's possible to access almost any information, communicate with
anyone else in the world, and do much more.
You can do all of this by connecting a
computer to the Internet, which is also called going online. When
someone says a computer is online, it's just another way of saying it's
connected to the Internet.
The first workable prototype of the
Internet came in the late 1960s. ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency
Network). Originally funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, ARPANET used
packet switching to allow multiple computers to communicate on a single
network. The technology continued to grow in the 1970s after scientists Robert
Kahn and Vinton Cerf developed Transmission Control Protocol and Internet
Protocol, or TCP/IP, a communications model that set standards for how data could
be transmitted between multiple networks.
A wide variety of services, namely,
electronic mail, file transfer, vast information resources, interest group
membership, interactive collaboration, multimedia displays, real-time
broadcasting, shopping opportunities, and many more are available on the
Internet. To provide all these services, the Internet consists primarily of a
variety of access protocols.

Write the difference between Intranet & Extranet
Attributes |
Internet |
Intranet |
Definition |
The Internet is a network of several
computers connected worldwide using the Internet protocol suite (TCP/ IP). |
An Intranet is a private network of
computers designed for a certain group of people and owned by a particular
firm or organization. |
Users |
As stated above, the Internet is a
globally connected network; users' number is comparatively much higher than
Intranet. |
Because of a limited range, the total
numbers of users on Intranet are limited. When compared to the Internet,
Intranet has very few users. |
Accessibility |
Anyone can access and use it. |
Only certain people are authorized to
use Intranet because it is a company's internal network, so accessible by the
employees or admin who have login credentials. |
Type of Network |
The Internet is a type of public
network. |
The intranet is a type of private
network installed mainly for any organization operations. |
Security |
Because the internet is a public
network, it is a considerably less secure network. Cybercriminals usually
target people using the Internet. |
Due to limited access, there is no
such possibility or very less possibility of cyber threats in Intranet,
making it more secure compared to that of the Internet. |
Information and Data |
Due to a wider range, the availability
of information and the data is unlimited. People are free to use the Internet
and their knowledge. |
The intranet is limited to
group-specific information. That means the Intranet information and data are
limited to any specific company's records, operations, inventory, etc. |
Traffic |
Due to a higher number of users and a
public network. It is almost uncountable. |
Intranet has limited users, and so
visitor's traffic is limited. In the case of Intranet, traffic is countable. |
Characteristic |
The Internet includes several
intranets. |
The intranet is like a subset of the
Internet |
Write a short note on Intranet
An intranet is a computer
network for sharing information, easier communication, collaboration
tools, operational systems, and other computing services within an
organization, usually to the exclusion of access by outsiders. An intranet
is a private network contained within an enterprise that is used to
securely share company information and computing resources among employees. An
intranet can also be used for working in groups and teleconferences. Intranets
encourage communication within an organization. An intranet is a private -
internal - business network that enables your employees to share information,
collaborate, and improve their communications.
An example is a website that an airline
company exclusively uses to deliver updates and information to its workforce.
Write a short note on Extranet
An extranet is a private network
similar to an intranet, but typically open to external parties, such as
business partners, suppliers, key customers, etc. The main purpose of an
extranet is to allow users to exchange data and applications, and share
information.
An extranet enables your business to
communicate and collaborate more effectively with selected business partners,
suppliers and customers.
Extranet in simple terms provides a
secure network for an organization to share information with relevant people
outside the organization. It is part of an organization's intranet divided via
a firewall. Examples:
An e-commerce site exchanges information with its retailers, a supplier's
through an extranet network
Write a short note on ISDN
ISDN or Integrated Services Digital
Network is a circuit-switched telephone network system that transmits both
data and voice over a digital line. You can also think of it as a set of
communication standards to transmit data, voice, and signaling. These digital
lines could be copper lines. ISDN connections have a reputation for providing
better speeds and higher quality than traditional connections. Faster speeds
and better connections allow data transmissions to travel more reliably.
ISDN stands for Integrated Services
Digital Network. It's a set of communication standards that uses digital
transmission to make phone calls, video calls, transmit data and other network
services over the circuits of the traditional PSTN (Public Switched Telephone
Network).
Today, ISDN has been replaced by
broadband internet access connections like DSL, WAN, and cable modems. It is
still used as a backup when the main lines fail.
Explain TCP/IP (For 2 marks write only 1 sentence)
TCP/IP
stands for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol and is a suite
of communication protocols used to interconnect network devices on the internet. TCP/IP is also used as a communications protocol in a
private computer network (an intranet or extranet). TCP/IP is a standard Internet communications protocols that
allow digital computers to communicate over long distances. The
Internet is a packet-switched network, in which information is broken down into
small packets, sent individually over many different routes at the same time,
and then reassembled at the receiving end. TCP is the component that collects
and reassembles the packets of data, while IP is responsible for making
sure the packets are sent to the right destination. TCP/IP was developed in the
1970s and adopted as the protocol standard for ARPANET (the
predecessor to the Internet) in 1983. TCP/IP is responsible for full-fledged
internet data connectivity and transmitting the data end to end by providing
other functions, including addressing, mapping and acknowledgment. TCP/IP
contains four layers, which differ slightly from the OSI model.
The technology is so common that one
would rarely use the full name. In other words, in common usage the acronym is
now the term itself.
